Job Description

Bioinformatics Scientist

Description
Procter & Gamble’s Global Biotechnology organization drives consumer delight and brand loyalty through leadership in biological innovation. Our mission is to deliver superior end-to-end innovation that provides irresistible consumer product experiences utilizing cutting edge biotechnology tools and expertise. We create and translate high-quality, science-backed biological breakthroughs that inspire and enable solutions to transform the daily lives of our consumers.

As part of the Global Biotechnology organization, Procter & Gamble’s Bioinformatics team is a group of computational biologists who employ the power of computer-based analytical techniques to explore biological data sets to enable our R&D organization to: 1) develop fundamental understanding of biology related to our business interests, 2) define mechanisms of action needed to provide consumer benefits, 3) identify specific molecules that can deliver these benefits, 4) prepare patent applications to protect intellectual property associated with novel approaches developed to do this work, and 5) support the “credentialing” of this science with external stakeholders (e.g., thought leaders; science editors; consumers of our products).

Computational biology/bioinformatics has become a critical component of life science-based discovery work. Such techniques include whole genome sequencing, chip-based gene expression profiling, next-generation RNASeq-based characterization of differential gene expression, metagenomic sequencing of entire microbial communities, etc.

We seek an entry-level bioinformaticist / computational biologist to join our team. You will possess a unique hybrid skill set, having: a) a strong background in high-level mathematics (to generate algorithms needed to mine these data sets), b) advanced computer science skills (to encode these algorithms in computational code needed to run the analyses), and c) a sufficient background in the biology being studied (to connect the algorithms/code generated to the relevant biological hypotheses being explored).

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in computer sciences, computational biology, bioinformatics, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field and a master or bachelor's degree in biological sciences or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience working on large biological data sets (e.g. microarray, SNP, proteomics, whole genome sequences; microbiome characterization).
  • Broad experience in using systems biology approach for the interpretation of cellular processes, and/or biomarker discovery. Demonstrated skills in applying/developing/improving machine learning and pattern recognition algorithms for large scale biological data.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas are highly desirable: biological image analysis, metabolic flux analysis, GWAS data analysis, text mining and biological network inference.
  • Extensive programming skills in C/C++, Java, Python, R, and Perl.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, marital status, citizenship, HIV/AIDS status or any other legally protected factor.

Except in rare situations based on Procter & Gamble's sole discretion. Procter & Gamble does not sponsor candidates for permanent residency. Any exceptions would be based on the Company's specific business needs at the time and place of recruitment as well as the particular qualifications of the individual.
